From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Angola (with a CAGR of +17.8%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2024, supplies from abroad of tube or pipe fittings (of iron or steel) decreased by -9% to 156K tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports saw a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 301K tons. From 2015 to 2024, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, iron or steel tube fitting imports fell modestly to $837M in 2024. In general, imports recorded a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 11%. The level of import peaked at $1.1B in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2024, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In 2024, South Africa (37K tons), distantly followed by Egypt (15K tons), Nigeria (9.1K tons), Morocco (9K tons), Algeria (8.2K tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (7.1K tons) represented the largest importers of tube or pipe fittings (of iron or steel), together committing 54% of total imports. Angola (6.4K tons), Tanzania (5.8K tons), Botswana (4.1K tons) and Ghana (3.9K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.1% from 2013 to 2024. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.3%), Botswana (+4.7%) and Tanzania (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +5.3% from 2013-2024. Ghana and Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Algeria (-3.0%), Egypt (-11.9%), Angola (-12.0%) and Nigeria (-12.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+4.3 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.1 p.p.), Tanzania (+2.4 p.p.), Morocco (+2.2 p.p.) and Botswana (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2013-2024, the share of Angola (-5.5 p.p.), Nigeria (-9.3 p.p.) and Egypt (-12.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($119M), Egypt ($116M) and Angola ($82M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2024, with a combined 38% share of total imports. Nigeria, Algeria, Morocco, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Tanzania and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +4.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The imports of the eight major types of tube or pipe fittings (of iron or steel), namely tube or pipe fittings of non-stainless steel other than flanges, elbows, bends, sleeves or butt welding fittings, tube or pipe flanges other than stainless steel, iron or steel cast fittings, other than of non-malleable cast iron, iron or steel cast fittings of non-malleable cast iron, tube or pipe butt welding fittings other than of stainless steel, tube or pipe fittings of stainless steel other than flanges, elbows, bends, sleeves or butt welding fittings, tube or pipe threaded elbows, bends and sleeves other than of stainless steel and tube or pipe flanges of stainless steel, represented more than two-thirds of total import.
From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for tube or pipe butt welding fittings of stainless steel (with a CAGR of +3.6%), while purchases for the other products experienced a decline in the imports figures.
In value terms, tube or pipe fittings of non-stainless steel other than flanges, elbows, bends, sleeves or butt welding fittings ($264M) constitutes the largest type of tube or pipe fittings (of iron or steel) imported in Africa, comprising 32% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by iron or steel cast fittings, other than of non-malleable cast iron ($116M), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by tube or pipe flanges other than stainless steel, with a 12% share.
For tube or pipe fittings of non-stainless steel other than flanges, elbows, bends, sleeves or butt welding fittings, imports contracted by an average annual rate of -3.6% over the period from 2013-2024. With regard to the other imported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: iron or steel cast fittings, other than of non-malleable cast iron (-6.8% per year) and tube or pipe flanges other than stainless steel (-1.6% per year).
The import price in Africa stood at $5,377 per ton in 2024, rising by 5.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2024, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2024 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was tube or pipe butt welding fittings of stainless steel ($9,156 per ton), while the price for tube or pipe flanges other than stainless steel ($3,024 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2024, overseas shipments of tube or pipe fittings (of iron or steel) decreased by -14.6% to 19K tons for the first time since 2021, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports showed a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 49%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 27K tons. From 2021 to 2024, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, iron or steel tube fitting exports shrank to $119M in 2024. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2023 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $137M, and then shrank in the following year.
South Africa was the main exporting country with an export of about 13K tons, which finished at 70% of total exports. Angola (2.1K tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Tunisia (5.2%). Egypt (638 tons) and Djibouti (453 tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.0% from 2013 to 2024. At the same time, Angola (+92.8%), Djibouti (+57.8%) and Tunisia (+9.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +92.8% from 2013-2024. By contrast, Egypt (-9.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Angola (+11 p.p.), Tunisia (+3.8 p.p.) and Djibouti (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Egypt and South Africa saw its share reduced by -4% and -11.7% from 2013 to 2024, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($84M) remains the largest iron or steel tube fitting supplier in Africa, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($10M), with an 8.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 7.2% share.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -1.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+7.4% per year) and Tunisia (+7.9% per year).
In 2024, tube or pipe fittings of non-stainless steel other than flanges, elbows, bends, sleeves or butt welding fittings (8.7K tons) was the key type of tube or pipe fittings (of iron or steel), creating 45% of total exports. Exports of tube or pipe fittings of non-stainless steel other than flanges, elbows, bends, sleeves or butt welding fittings decreased at an average annual rate of -1.5% from 2013 to 2024. At the same time, tube or pipe flanges of stainless steel (+2.0%) and tube or pipe fittings of stainless steel other than flanges, elbows, bends, sleeves or butt welding fittings (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, tube or pipe flanges of stainless steel emerged as the fastest-growing type exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +2.0% from 2013-2024. By contrast, tube or pipe flanges other than stainless steel (-4.1%), tube or pipe threaded elbows, bends and sleeves other than of stainless steel (-4.5%), iron or steel cast fittings of non-malleable cast iron (-4.7%) and iron or steel cast fittings, other than of non-malleable cast iron (-8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of tube or pipe fittings of non-stainless steel other than flanges, elbows, bends, sleeves or butt welding fittings (+5.5 p.p.), tube or pipe fittings of stainless steel other than flanges, elbows, bends, sleeves or butt welding fittings (+4.4 p.p.) and tube or pipe flanges of stainless steel (+3.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2013-2024, the share of tube or pipe flanges other than stainless steel (-1.8 p.p.), iron or steel cast fittings of non-malleable cast iron (-2.4 p.p.) and iron or steel cast fittings, other than of non-malleable cast iron (-7.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other products remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, tube or pipe fittings of non-stainless steel other than flanges, elbows, bends, sleeves or butt welding fittings ($49M) remains the largest type of tube or pipe fittings (of iron or steel) supplied in Africa, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by tube or pipe fittings of stainless steel other than flanges, elbows, bends, sleeves or butt welding fittings ($16M), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by tube or pipe flanges of stainless steel, with a 9.3% share.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of tube or pipe fittings of non-stainless steel other than flanges, elbows, bends, sleeves or butt welding fittings exports was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: tube or pipe fittings of stainless steel other than flanges, elbows, bends, sleeves or butt welding fittings (+2.7% per year) and tube or pipe flanges of stainless steel (+2.8% per year).

Based on 2024 figures, iron or steel tube fitting export price increased by +94.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 85%.
